In 2019, the Abbey reopened after a major project on the visitor centre, museum, and interpretation across the site. Almost £1.6 million was invested to transform Whitby Abbey so its history can be enjoyed for many years. You can now explore 3,000 years of history in The Ammonite Quest exhibition, which features dramatic displays of unique objects and an interactive experience.

Outdoors, the courtyard area has been transformed into a place of total peace and calm, with a tree-lined avenue, seating, and green spaces planted with herbs, perfect for a relaxed coffee or a picnic. There is also a cosy coffee shop near the entrance to the abbey. 

It is a perfect viewing point offering stunning views of Whitby harbour and town. Events are held throughout the year.
