Why not treat your loved one to a romantic break on the Yorkshire Coast? Here are 9 ways to spend a romantic weekend in Whitby
On the 14th February, we send approximately 150 million Valentines cards to those that we love. We also buy flowers, chocolates, Jet Jewellery, and whisk our loved one’s away for a romantic getaway. Why we do this is a little bit of a mystery but is thought to be based around a saint named, yes you guessed it, Valentine. Rumours abound regarding who he actually was, however, since there were at least three Saint Valentines recorded that could be the one.
Personally, my favourite candidate is the one that has a rather romantic story attached to him and it is this that I’m choosing to repeat. Therefore, Saint Valentine was a man who was imprisoned but had fallen in love with a young girl he met during his confinement. Just before his death, it is reported, that he sent a letter to her signing off with the words ‘from your Valentine.’ And from there it all began!
Surprisingly, especially to menfolk, romance does not have to be saved up just for the one day that is Valentine’s day but rather can happen at any time of the year. To give you some ideas on how you can be romantic all year long, here are some Whitby area romance packed getaway ideas.
Bubbly with Buble (well nearly) on Valentine’s day!
Our first romantic getaway idea is actually happening on Valentine’s day, well the day after, and in the splendour that is the Met Ballroom, Whitby. Built in 1897, the Met Ballroom is a stunningly ornate and unique stained glass-ceilinged Victorian ballroom. They hold many events throughout the year which you could attend on a romantic night out.
For Valentine’s day the Met Ballroom is presenting a three-course meal and a bottle of fizz for your partner and yourself to enjoy. This also comes with the added bonus of being crooned to by the fantastic Michael Buble tribute act, Dave Perkins. Prepare to be delighted and well fed listening to the sounds of ‘it’s a beautiful day’, ‘haven’t met you yet’, and more.
Following your night of romance at the Met Ballroom why not book into the elegant Victorian styled Grantley House to finish your night off in style? Here you will find a relaxing, friendly, and clean environment where nothing is too much trouble. It is located on the edge of the North York Moors just a ten-minute stroll from Whitby harbour.
The rooms themselves at Grantley House are elegant, comfortable, and furnished with flat screen TVs, modern bathrooms, original fireplaces, and tea and coffee facilities. A full English breakfast is available daily in the Grantley colourful dining room. Choose from a range of other breakfast styles too such as continental style, and vegetarian.
Written in the stars!
The North York Moors and the coastline adjoined to it have vast expanses of unpolluted skies that are a phenomenal place to spend the evening stargazing. Be it sat huddled up in the harbour of Whitby, or whilst taking a romantic stroll through the moors fields and woods you are sure to see a fabulous array of around 2000 stars and if you’re lucky the milky way! Just remember to wrap up warm, take a blanket to snuggle in, and perhaps even a flask with a hot toddy to share.
When you’re done stargazing why not retire back to the cozy, romantic surroundings of your very own country cottage? Blackbird Cottage in Iburndale would be ideal. It is situated very close to the North York Moors and your 2000 stars and has a gorgeous inglenook fireplace complete with a gas stove to warm up your bones and snuggle by after your chilly night out.
Blackbird Cottage is a quintessential English country cottage tucked away on a quiet lane in the centre of Iburndale. It has two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen, morning room, and bathroom. Outside there is also a garden courtyard and room to park for one car. If you are looking for a world away from the city hustle for your romantic getaway, Blackbird Cottage is it.
Mademoiselle, this way, please!
Every now and again the assertion that the oldies are the best turns out to be 100% true. Which is why if you’re looking to do something romantic you really should consider the simple and trusted favourite experience, the candlelit dinner!
Tucked away in the back streets of Whitby is a French-style cafe bistro that is the very essence of what a romantic meal for two venue should be like. It is housed in a gorgeous Georgian building, has a beautifully romantic setting and goes by the name of Mademoiselles, tres chic!
As well as offering fabulous French cuisine such as moules mariniere, poulet breton, saumon grille, and cassoulet toulousaine, Mademoiselles also has its very own gin room, cellar bar, and fabulously romantic secret courtyard. Here you can cozy up with your loved one under a snuggly blanket and enjoy a quiet drink.
Just a short walk away from Mademoiselles, around seven minutes, is The Willows where we recommend you spend the night whilst on your romantic break. It is situated right next to Pannett Park which is certainly worth exploring whilst you are in Whitby and offers a luxury akin to romance.
All the rooms at The Willows have been decorated to a high standard and are en suite. Hospitality trays, fluffy towels, comfy beds, and wifi all come as standard. There is also digital TV should you wish to cuddle up in bed and relax for a while.
In the mornings The Willows offer an ample Yorkshire breakfast or should you prefer it Whitby Kippers. These are served in a spacious dining room that overlooks Pannett Park. Look out, also for the jams and preserves served at this gorgeous guest house as they are all homemade and incredibly tasty.
True Love Never Dies!
No trip to Whitby, even a romantic one, would be complete without taking in at least some of its history, and what better way to do that than to explore the classic gothic horror story that is Dracula?
Surprisingly, perhaps to some, Dracula is also a story of a great love lost and sought after. Dracula who has lost his great love sees Mina in a picture and instantly falls in love. After all, she reminds him of a love that he once knew and he pursues that with a passion saying of her, to her ‘there are darknesses in life and there are lights, and you (Mina) are one of the lights, the light of all lights.’
The Dracula Experience, a tour that tells much of the story of Dracula is not exactly the most romantic of experiences that you could partake in Whitby. It is, however, a good reason to cling on to your partner, hold hands, and get really close under the guise of being scared. It contains eight scenes taken from the book and is made up of animated scenes, electronic special effects, and if you’re there at the right time a live actor or two.
Just a stone’s throw from the Dracula Experience is Dillons of Whitby, a gorgeous small but exquisite boutique guest house that we would recommend as the place to stay whilst you are in Whitby. It, like The Willows, overlooks Pannett Park and is the height of luxury.
With just five stunning rooms available Dillons of Whitby offers their guests contemporary elegance teamed with modern convenience and hospitality that is warm and traditional. All their rooms take inspiration from around the world and have sumptuous beds with Egyptian cotton sheets. Flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, fluffy bathrobes, complimentary toiletries, and en suite bathrooms are standard.
Dillons of Whitby can also help you go the extra mile in romance by providing locally sourced chocolates, fizz, hand-tied bouquets, and even an in-house massage!
Let’s walk, let’s talk, under the moon of love!
Just eight miles from Whitby lies the gorgeous and peaceful Runswick Bay which is ideal for any couple looking for romantic walks by day or night. Rated as one of the coastlines prettiest destinations it really is a place you can just get away from it all and enjoy each other’s company.
Walks here are varied with the Cleveland Way running North and South right on the doorstep. Then there is the gorgeous sheltered sandy beach famous for its rock pooling, fossil hunting, and breathtaking views. The town itself offers a plethora of red-roofed houses and ancient buildings such as the old coastguards thatched cottage and the tiny Methodist chapel built in 1829 by Runswick Bays women folks.
With all the walks you and your partner will be taking over your romantic break away you’ll be wanting somewhere cozy and comfortable to stay. For this, in Runswick Bay, we recommend The Firs Guesthouse where you will receive true Yorkshire hospitality at its best.
All the rooms at The Firs Guesthouse are en suite with TV’s, hospitality trays, sofas, easy chairs, radios, iPod docks, and wifi. They have a variety of double rooms and more romantic four posters for you to choose from. Whichever style of room you go with, they are light, airy, and spacious, perfect spaces for cozying on down after long days roaming the North Yorkshire coast.
All aboard for romance!
Typically, a romantic meal out consists of a candlelit restaurant, plenty of wine, great food, and being on land! However, romance doesn’t have to be so traditional, and if you’re looking for something just that little bit different we have something perfect for you.
The HM Bark Endeavour is a replica of the ship sailed by Captain James Cook that has been brought to Whitby harbour and transformed into a floating museum. It also has a fabulous restaurant called the Orlop which hosts fabulous dining events on a monthly basis.
It is one of these dining events that we would recommend for your romantic night out as on the 14th February, Valentine’s day, of course, they are holding a fine dining evening for you and your nearest and dearest.
You will start the night off with a glass of champagne served on the deck followed by a sumptuous two or three-course meal. The menu includes dishes such as grilled prawns with mango salsa, sage and honey marinated pork tenderloin with mustard mash, and fabulous chocolate heaven to share for dessert.
Located on the gorgeous West Cliff of Whitby the Riviera Guesthouse is an ideal hideaway for you and your loved one to spend the night in. It has fifteen uniquely styled rooms including fabulous four posters, with most having glorious views over the North Sea.
Every room in the Riviera Guesthouse is en suite and has LCD TV’s, refreshment trays, large fluffy white towels, and sumptuous beds. Downstairs is a gorgeous dining room where your breakfast will be served that has floor to ceiling bay windows revealing a magnificent view. Breakfast choices are varied with something for everyone being available from full English breakfasts to smoked salmon and Whitby kippers.
History, haunting, and love!
Robin Hood’s Bay has to be one of the most popular destinations on the North Yorkshire coast. It is pretty, full of history, and quiet enough to be an ideal spot for a romantic getaway for two. Whitby, if you want to go somewhere a little more bustling, is only a fourteen-minute drive away.
There is lots to do and see in Robin Hood’s Bay whilst you are there that will make your romantic getaway a time to remember. We, however, suggest that you do something a little different but conducive to getting you close, holding hands, and snuggling up tight!
The Robin Hood’s Bay ghost walk may not seem like a traditional romantic escapade to participate in but believe me when I say it can be. Full of tales that include hauntings, smuggling, local legends, and folklore, it is spooky and will make you huddle tight.
Perfectly positioned for jaunts to Whitby, Scarborough, and Robin Hood’s Bay, Fylingthorpe is a gorgeous chocolate box village that will be perfect as a base for your romantic break. We would suggest the lovely Howdale Cottage as the place for you to stay as it is cutesy, cozy, and just oozes romantic comfort.
A detached stone built cottage, Howdale is very traditional with its cozy beamed lounge, traditional kitchen, winding staircases, and pretty enclosed garden. As a bonus in the garden, you will find a private hot tub for two complete with fluffy white towels and robes. Perfect for lazing and gazing at the stars whilst sipping champagne with your loved one.
Cocktails, cozy taverns, and contemporary bars!
For some, a night on the tiles with their partner is the ideal way to spend a romantic evening. Be it quiet drinks for two by a roaring fire or dancing the night away on a crowded dance floor, no two people’s idea of romance is the same. For this very reason here are a couple of Whitby’s finest drinking establishments with different styles that you and your partner may care to visit.
The Star Inn is possibly the most traditional of all the pubs in Whitby. It has a good selection of ales and is busy enough for you to have a really good time but not so cramped that you cannot move or hear yourself think. If you like your pub’s old school this is probably the one for you.
Harry’s Bar, by comparison, is relatively new and fairly modern with its fun mix of cafe style, cocktail bar, and restaurant mix. Believe it or not, this fabulous venue serves over 20 cocktails, 11 champagnes, 16 wines, 12 boutique beers, and for the non-drinkers out there five types of coffee.
Over on the East side of Whitby is the fabulous Calico Cottage which provides a relaxing and cozy bolthole for you to escape to when the nightlife of Whitby has become too much. It is set back off a cobbled street hidden from view and provides everything you could need.
Inside, the property is set over three floors with steep staircases so be careful if your romantic night out has left you a little tipsy. There is a well-designed kitchen, gorgeous double bedroom with a sleigh bed, comfy lounge with reclining chairs, and a bathroom complete with bath and shower.
A world built just for two!
Close to Robin Hood’s Bay is the tiny but beautiful hamlet of Raw which is where we would like to recommend as our final romantic getaway destination. Honestly, there is very little to do in Raw but this could make it the perfect place for those couples who really want to keep their weekend for two strictly just the two of them.
The accommodation in Raw plays a huge part in this suggested getaway as it is the perfect place for walkers, artists, and those who like a bit of wildlife. It is named the Glen Studio and is the perfect place to experience the tranquility of rural life.
Inside this rural cottage is basic, to say the least. There is a combined lounge and bedroom with a small kitchenette. The bathroom is separate to the main living area and has everything you need but this doesn’t change the fact that this cottage brings new meaning to the word cozy!
What Glen Studio lacks for in space it makes up for in the stunning surroundings it provides. There is a small cottage garden with a seating area surrounded by fields that if you’re lucky enough, you will spot roe deer, foxes, badgers, rabbits, and wild birds in.
