Originally Sandsend was a lot smaller but as cottages were built for workers locally, it ended up joining onto the village of East row and becoming just one village. For entertainment, there is an art gallery, surf school, restaurants, cafes and pubs. Down on the sandy beach, you will find rock pools, and perhaps even some fossils!

Raithwaite Estate
The Raithwaite Estate is a fabulous coastal resort that includes two hotels, cottages, a lake house and spa. There really is accommodation to suit everyone here. From relaxing breaks to a couples retreat with pets, Raithwaite Estate has it all.
Set in over one hundred acres of ground you can choose from The Hall with its forty-five bedrooms or The Keep with Twenty eight. Fancy something a little less formal and there are eight stone-built cottages and a six-bedroomed house.
The Hall – Set overlooking the gardens, The Hall is the largest of the two hotels on site. Rooms available include standard, king size, super king-size, queen size, and family suites. This hotel also includes The Courtyard to the front of the hotel which overlooks the woods and stream. Rooms here are set over two floors and you have the option of queen or king-size beds.
The Keep – The Keep is a contemporary hotel set apart from The Hall and overlooking the woodland on the estate. Many rooms here are suitable for the disabled and also pet friendly. They are available in either a king-size or super king-size option. Some of the rooms in The Keep have interconnecting door should you need that type of access.
Cottages and Lakehouse – Whilst the cottages and lake house are not hotels in Sandsend, Whitby, they are a part of this estate and worth mentioning. Both come with everything you could need for your holiday and more. If you don’t want to cook for yourselves in the lake house a private chef and waiting staff can be arranged. If you stay in the cottages you have full access to the dining experiences at the hotels.
Dining at Raithwaite Estate comes with several options. You can formally dine in their brasserie which serves french classics with a Yorkshire twist or relax a little more in The Hunters Lounge. There is also a bar that serves light lunches, afternoon tea and signature cocktails. The perfect way to relax after a day out or a day in at the spa.
Should you choose to use the spa it is located within the main hotel, The Hall. There they have four treatment rooms, a heated pool, jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and gym. Pampering packages are available from around £70.

Here you will find peaceful tranquility whether you choose to stay in one of the hotels five rooms, or its holiday cottage situated just a stones throw from the beach. All the rooms are en-suite with Sky and wifi access. Each room also has individual character with some being bold and comfortable and others ornate and traditional.
The Woodlands Hotel also has a self-catering cottage available. The Schoolhouse Cottage sleeps up to six guests and has an open plan kitchen with wood burning stove. The entire cottage is comfortably furnished with a bathroom upstairs and down. There are two king size rooms and one twin.

The Beach Hotel is family run with all rooms having a wonderful sea view. It is located close to another beautiful village worth visiting called Grosmont.

The Estbek House Hotel is a stunning Georgian property that is grade two listed. Previously it was the home of the Alum mining office being built around 1750.

This stunning Victorian Hotel was originally built as a shipbuilders retreat and is the perfect example of the countryside meeting the sea. Set amongst four acres of lawn it really is luxurious. The rooms themselves have four-poster beds and Egyptian cotton sheets, the height of luxury. They are available in doubles, twins and a family suite with adjoining doors.

The Wheeldale Hotel is a more casual environment but still highly rated at four stars. A number of its bedrooms offer fabulous sea views overlooking Whitby itself. All rooms at this hotel are doubles as they do not accommodate guests under eighteen years old. All thirteen of the rooms are bright and airy with some having separate seating areas.
Breakfast here includes full English with a vegetarian option plus yoghurts, toast, fruit, fruit juices and tea and coffee. Parking is free as is wifi and the Sky TV.
