Railway in Wartime on the North York Moors Railway

The North York Moors Railway hosts one of its most popular events in October; Railway in Wartime. Dress up like it’s 1945 and enjoy a fun filled weekend for all the family!

North York Moors Railway (NYMR) is forever looking at ideas to promote the lovely Region in which it operates. It is fitting in the Centenary Year of the RAF that World War II is remembered.

History has given us the photographs of the years when Europe was at war, and this is recreated in a 3-day event. It provides a chance for families to experience what rail travel used to be like many years ago when the railway was such an important means of transport.

The Second World War was a time when spirit and camaraderie came to the fore and hopefully it is an atmosphere that NYMR can recreate without the sadness and struggle that was part of daily life.

You can get on board steam and heritage diesel trains and imagine you are back in time. The theme you will see at all the Stations on the North York Moors Railway line is World War II with entertainment and displays for everyone to enjoy. This is intended to be a real fun three days of remembrance.

Railway at War: Goathland Railway Station
Railway at War: Goathland Railway Station

Every single station will be ‘’dressed’’ for the occasion. Take for example Pickering where you will see a typical wartime street, ‘’The Sidings.’’ The Home Guard was the subject of a famous comedy show, ‘’Dad’s Army.’’ At both Goathland and Grosmont, there will be demonstrations by the ‘’Home Guard.’’

The happiest place will be Levisham Station where victory is celebrated. The entertainment will include music of the time with style show bands, dance troupes and more. 3672 Dame Vera Lynn will provide the genuine experience of a wartime locomotive.

This is a concept that has been embraced with the result that other similar events have sprung up across the Region.
