Runswick Bay Holiday Cottages For Your Consideration. Plan Your Next Trip To North Yorkshire With Our Handy Guide.
Runswick Bay sits at the northern end of a bay, well-sheltered below Lingrow Knowle, and in fact it almost seems that its cottages are huddled together for shelter and warmth.
This lovely little village on the North Yorkshire Coast has become a popular holiday destination sitting below North York Moors National Park.
It actually slipped into the sea in the 17th Century and had to be rebuilt slightly further south with sea walls and boulder piles added for protection.
There are numerous lovely walks in the surrounding area and this is definitely one of Runswick Bay’s major attractions. Formerly a fishing village, Runswick Bay with its sandy beach and sea is a great setting.
There are rock pools to explore and interesting fossils continue to be found; great fun for a family spending a holiday locally.
The village pub is the centre of local activity with a café also offering refreshments; cakes and pastries are home made. If you book one of Runswick Bay holiday cottages you can cater for yourself of course but a visit to the pub to meet locals will add to your knowledge of the village and the surrounding area.
The RNLI Lifeboat Station is no longer functioning but it is worth a visit, as is the little Methodist chapel built in 1829.
The cottages were formerly the homes of herring fishermen who stored their fish in houses that were located on what is today’s car park.
There were more than 20 boats working out of Runswick Bay in the middle of the 19th Century. Each cottage has just a little land where families grew vegetables.
