They’re excellent for hurling at politicians and most children agree that they’re the best thing since sliced bread. Elvis loved them too. What are we talking about? Milkshakes.
Milkshakes are causing quite a stir up in Whitby. A brand new milkshake bar opened recently and we were invited to visit to review the ‘Insane Ice Cream Megashakes’.

So, on the behalf of The Whitby Guide, Sara Harland, our intrepid local food writer took her family along to try out a selection from the menu of 16 ice cream shakes.
Shake It Up Whitby is based at 2 Grape Lane, the former site of Burgsys, near to the swing bridge. Once inside this new milkshake venture, the fun and colourful world of Shake It Up Whitby has been brought to life with clever touches in the décor and choice of artwork. There is artificial grass on the floor, there are tables to sit inside and a giant tv with music playing creating the vibe and excitement you’d expect at a quality milk bar or ice cream parlour.
Shake It Up is the brainchild of American entrepreneur, Neil Werner. This insane business idea was fuelled by Neil’s disappointing experience of a warm strawberry milkshake when visiting England with his children. During the trip to see his best friends Lee and Darren Walker from Middlesbrough, the trio decided that a better milkshake experience was possible. So, with a lot of encouragement from Neil’s children the Three Amigos drove to the supermarket, where 20 tubs of ice cream were grabbed to start experimenting with fillings and flavours. The infusion of American influenced megashakes with an English twist became the bedrock of Shake It Up Whitby’s menu.
My family and I were challenged with a megashake each! That’s a whole lotta sugar to plough through and we gasped as Augustus Gloop, Eaton Mess, Sticky Toffee Pudding and Terrifically Tart Cheesecake megashakes hit our table!
My husband was tasked with the Terrifically Tart Cheesecake insane ice cream megashake (£13.25) which is thick raspberry cheesecake milkshake with a frosted rim with crushed biscuit crumbs. A slice of cheesecake is the centre piece, finished with fresh raspberries and biscuit crumbs, then drizzled with chocolate sauce. My daughter took on the headliner ‘Augustus Gloop’ (£13.75), this is one of the heavyweights of the mega milkshakes. This chocolate milkshake would have the chocolate fudge cake-eater Bruce Bogtrotter from Matilda running scared!! This megashake is topped with a wedge of chocolate fudge cake and a skewer of toasted marshmallows!
My son chose the Sticky Toffee Pudding insane ice cream megashake (£13.35), this caramel creation is thick toffee milkshake with a Nutella frosted rim with toffee pieces. Inside the milkshake is a warm sticky toffee pudding and a chocolate bar pushed through fresh whipped cream drizzled with caramel sauce. This concoction was a mixture of cold ice cream with warm and gooey sticky toffee. I decided on the “healthier” option of the Eton Mess insane ice cream megashake (£13.25). An abundance of strawberries with a mixture of fresh cream, meringue and a cupcake inside a thick strawberry milkshake! This was the healthier choice due to having the element of fresh fruit being amongst this mix. This megashake rim was vanilla frosted with sprinkles and crushed meringue and finished with whipped cream and strawberry sauce.
All the ice cream megashakes were immense and brain freeze was bit of a side effect from indulging in the shakes. Things did get messy and we all started to hit the insane ice cream megashake wall, but we all powered through it to drain the megashake from its container.
There is a classic ice cream shake menu with prices starting from £6.25 with titles like Bananarama, Bubblegum, O-O-Oreo and Voluptuous Vanilla. Ideally the insane ice cream megashakes are best to shared since they’re so insane and massive. The volume of ingredients is quite staggering, but as a treat they’re hard to beat. I would recommend a few power walks up and down the 199 Steps to burn off an insane ice cream megashake.
We had such a warm welcome from the Three Amigos. The trio have worked hard to create this vibrant and vivacious milkshake business. A lot of imagination and creativity has gone into Shake It Up Whitby, with their unique brand of insane milkshakes and this comes through the flavours that flow through the straws of the megashakes. If you like a sweet treat during your stay in Whitby, do not hesitate to visit Shake It Up Whitby to try something totally different and delicious.
