Nestled on what is arguably Whitby’s prettiest street, Bluebell cottage sits in the heart of the old town, just a stone’s throw from Tate Hill beach and the famous 199 steps.
The East Pier, renowned for its spectacular sunrises and sunsets, is right on the doorstep, as are Whitby’s independent cafés, bars, galleries, restaurants and shops. Once you park your car you won’t need it again!
Bluebell Cottage has three bedrooms and sleeps five. It is thoughtfully designed and very much our home, one that we are delighted to share. I wanted it to feel like a true escape: cosy, characterful and welcoming all year round. There’s a wood-burning stove for cooler evenings, books beside the beds, bespoke bedding, and an eclectic mix of furniture sourced from vintage fairs and antique markets. Comfort was key, so every bed has a high-quality mattress, and essentials such as good coffee and reliable WiFi were non-negotiables. Guests are welcomed with a thoughtfully curated basket filled with ground coffee, teas and other treats. We also provide a parking permit so you don’t need to pay for parking.
Despite being moments from bustling Church Street, Henrietta Street is wonderfully peaceful in the evenings. One of our favourite rituals is walking up the street at dusk to the East Pier to watch the sun melt into the sea.
The cottage sits right beside the iconic 199 steps leading up to Whitby Abbey, where you can explore the atmospheric ruins, visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, and take in sweeping coastal views. The Whitby Museum and Whitby Jet Heritage Centre offer a fascinating glimpse into local history, while Whitby Brewery, perched by the Abbey, is a firm favourite for its excellent homemade pizzas (last orders at 7pm).
Just across the cobbled street from Bluebell Cottage, steps lead directly down onto the beach. Many mornings begin with a cup of coffee on the sand, sometimes still in pyjamas, or a bracing cold-water swim. From harbour boat trips and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to the Dracula Experience and nearby Sandsend Beach, there is so much to explore without ever needing to move the car.
Bluebell Cottage is more than a holiday home; it’s a place to breathe, to reconnect, and to fall a little bit in love with the sea just as we did.
