Housed in a merchant’s house built in the late 18th century, Magpie Cafe is steeped in local Whitby history. Opening its doors as a cafe in 1939, it has slowly built up a strong reputation in Whitby, making itself a Yorkshire landmark in its own right. Its elaborate range of freshly caught fish gives the customer a hard choice from the common cod, hake, haddock, and Dover sole, to unusual catfish, skate, wild sea bass and john dory fish.
Described by famous chef Rick Stein as “the place that opened my eyes to how good a chip shop could be”, Magpie Cafe has built its reputation on the back of its fish and chips, with queues often spilling out onto the street. Now it has added much more to its extensive menu. Sample their fresh mussels, seafood pots, Lobster Thermidor, and more. The Magpie Cafe also developed menus incorporating steak dishes for those who want less fish-based.

Located on Whitby’s coast, only a seconds walk from the sand and waves, is The Fisherman’s Wife. With the perfect combination of classic fish and chips with the subtle sophistication of seafood dining, it is easy to see why. With perfect seaside views, fresh produce, and a breadth of experience, it is no wonder why locals and holidaymakers return time and time.
Their fresh fish is carefully selected from the fish market in Whitby. Their Crab and Lobsters are caught daily from local Whitby waters, and Radford’s award-winning butchers in Sleights supply their delicious meat. They believe in only using the highest quality ingredients, resulting in some of the finest fish and chips in the area.
