Hadley’s Fish and Chips

The local gazette voted this fish and chip shop the best in Whitby!
This family-run restaurant has provided the same excellent service and quality food since 1937. It also offers takeaway. They receive glowing reviews, especially for their gluten-free options. Try their homemade tartare sauce and mushy peas alongside cod, haddock, and fishcakes.
The restaurant is bright, airy, spotlessly clean, and dog-friendly. It is relaxed and can seat up to 120 people on the ground floor and in upstairs dining rooms. Service here has always been excellent.

Abbey Wharf

Abbey Wharf is a must-visit for us every time we're in Whitby, especially when we're accompanied by our furry friends or little ones. Its warm and inviting atmosphere makes it a perfect spot for family outings.
The menu has so much variety that you can easily please everyone. The fish and chips here are fantastic, and there are loads of classic sides to have with them. The restaurant offers a wide selection of freshly caught seafood, steak, chicken, and daily vegetarian specials for those who want a little more variety.

Quayside

Another fish and chips restaurant and takeaway along the pier; you can easily spot it and even see a queue at peak times of the year! Quayside is a firm favourite with many people.
Serving exceptional quality, sustainable fish and seafood is extremely important to the Quayside staff and has long been. The chefs here take pride in offering 100% MSC-certified fish, meaning it is sustainably sourced.
Quayside has an extensive menu, including a wholesome homemade fish pie, salads, classic cod and chips, and a host of gluten-free options.

Mister Chips

Voted by the Guardian as one of Britain's top ten seaside fish and chip shops, Mister Chips has an exceedingly high reputation to live up to!
They have been serving delicious comfort food since 1981. In addition to classic fish and chips, the restaurant offers an a la carte menu of gorgeously presented dishes, including seafood chowder and steak casserole.
The takeaway section of Mister Chips offers a far more casual dining experience and is the best way to enjoy their cod and chips. The homemade batter recipe is fried to prevent the fish from becoming too greasy, and they even offer gluten-free fish.
Mister Chips is part of the Responsible Fishing Scheme, which strives to use only ethically and locally sourced products.

Fish Box

Ideal for families and travellers who are on the go, Fish Box is very reasonably priced and perfect to pop in before or after exploring Whitby. There's also an indoor and a small outdoor seating area for those sunnier days.
At Fish Box, 100% compostable food packaging is used, so customers can rest assured that the food packaging used is eco-friendly.
The setting here is more relaxed, but the fish and chips are just as great as those at the other locations in Whitby. Despite what the name might suggest, Fish Box also offers chicken filets, steak pies, and jacket potatoes.

Silver Street Fisheries

Silver Street Fisheries is a bit of a hidden gem in Whitby! And shhh, but it's one of our favourites. Definitely in our top five. It's a local takeaway shop with excellent reviews.
There is a small amount of indoor and outdoor seating here, but it's also great if you're staying nearby and fancy a fish and chips dinner or want to enjoy your food outside in Whitby; watch out for the seagulls!
This is a great option if you want great food, friendly service and the experience of a local favourite.

Trenchers

We always rave about Trenchers' greatness but don't just take it from us. You can read hundreds of fabulous reviews. One of our favourite things about Trenchers is that you can get varied portion sizes here, so we often visit at lunchtime for a smaller portion.
The fish here is just so fresh and has so much flavour. The batter is light and crisp. The curry sauce here is particularly great! The menu includes fresh seafood salads, crab, lobster, fresh fish, homemade pies and lasagnas, vegetarian options, gluten-free options, and a dedicated children's menu.
Don't be put off by queues! This restaurant has loads of space, and the line will move quickly. The staff are always so friendly. The restaurant is clean and bright, and the atmosphere is lovely overall. They also have a takeaway.

The Fisherman’s Wife

We reckon The Fisherman's Wife tops them all for fish and chips with the most incredible sea views.
The restaurant serves traditional fish and chips along with an extensive seafood menu, including some mouth-watering shellfish dishes. All ingredients are locally sourced wherever possible, and the friendly staff is always happy to assist you with any meal selections or dietary requirements.
They also feature a heated outdoor area where they serve their takeaway menu. You can get fish, chips, Barista coffee, hot and cold drinks, and Mr. Whippy ice creams. Dogs are welcome in this area.

Railway Chippy

Offering home deliveries and in-store takeaways, the Railway Chippy is a typical local chip shop. Some unique items on the menu include Pineapple Rings, Cheese, Onion Fry Its, and Black Pudding. Their portions are huge for the price.

Located along the harbour, Magpie Café is one of Whitby's most famous restaurants.

Royal Fisheries

Royal Fisheries is a well-established family-run restaurant with a distinct local charm. With an interesting family history, Royal Fisheries aims to give customers great food at low prices. You can choose to eat in or take away here.
Their crinkle-shaped chips are delicious, and we thoroughly enjoy the fishcakes with sweet chilli sauce as a lighter option. The small cod and chips as part of the Yorkshire special, served with bread & butter, mushy peas, and tea, is fantastic. The attentive staff always make us feel very welcome. Expect a friendly atmosphere, tasty food, and plenty of local conversations.

Royal Fisheries definitely the best in Whitby and we’ve been to them all.
Russell’s Fish and Chips has now gone guys. The takeaway has been refurbed and has new owners – now called Angel Fisheries. Still a decent Chippie!!
The Magpie everytime
Without doubt quayside is the best as well as excellent value. Tried most of the alternative ones but always go back to quayside
I cannot argue with any of that. I have visited The Magpie several times, and Papa’s too, more than once. Fine operations. As are three of the others that I have been to just the once down the years.
But I hope my friend Dino Papas won’t be offended when I say that the finest F&C in all Yorkshire is not to be found in Whitby, but just two miles out of town, in Sleights (rhyme with tights).
Eskdale Fisheries Restaurant is quite nonpareil.
Check it out if you have a car.
There are fabulous fish and chips in Whitby, ive been numerous times.
Magpie is top of the lot ,fabulous food great atmosphere reasonably priced
They’re all good so far, except for Papa’s, served luke-warm. ????
I’ve been eating Fish, Chips and Peas at Whitby over 50 years and recall an excellent Bouillabaisse at Greens in 2012. ????
Philmo
Greens was not a fish n chip
Shop
Fine dining
Always find Mr Chips excellent lovely restaurant good service seafood platter is scrumptious as are all fish dishes Take away is always good and would highly recommend Mr Chips
Trenchers every time. Yes, The Magpie is very good but nothing beats Trenchers.
I’m sure all the mentioned fish and chip shops are excellent and we have visited many in Whitby over the years. Our main concern now when choosing a good fish and chip is what they cook their wares in! My husband is a vegetarian so won’t eat anything fried in lard and to be honest I much prefer oil for frying. Perhaps when you next do a review this could be a mentionable? Whitby is our favourite place for holidays, seaside, countryside, lots to see and do – love the Abbey and the Dracula story that takes part there. ????
Hi Linda, we’ll investigate and try to obtain relevant information from local fish and chip shops. If we succeed, we’ll update the article.
The new Trenchers takeaway advertises that it uses vegetable oil. I think the original uses beef dripping
Magpie is the best
Hi Jackie, many people would agree with you. It’s also one of our favourites!
Try Riverside Fisheries. Best there is.
Hi Pete, Riverside Fisheries are certainly a hidden gem.
Visited Whitby a couple of days ago and had a lovely small portion of fish, chips and mushy peas in Tiffins.
Trenches, no contest! Ate there 3 tines in 3 days. Went to another fish & chips shop our last night in Whitby and ended up throwing the food away (we’d already paid) and went to Trenchers instead.
