6 Things I Love About Whitby, (And You Will Too!)

Here are six things I absolutely adore about Whitby – prepare to fall in love!

Whitby is a coastal town that has captured my heart in more ways than one. From its rich history to its breathtaking natural beauty, this hidden gem has so many things to love. Here are six things I absolutely adore about Whitby and why I'm convinced you'll fall in love with it, too!

1. You can visit Whitby Abbey

Whitby Abbey.

I love that you can see Whitby Abbey in the distance as you approach from the North York Moors. The way it looks over the town and the North Sea is so beautiful.

Whitby Mini Guide

We have created a FREE mini-guide with all the essential information about Whitby, now available for instant download.

Walking around Whitby Abbey is like stepping into a gothic novel. It's no wonder Bram Stoker chose this spot as Dracula's landing place.

Climb the 199 steps to reach it, and you'll be rewarded with panoramic views that will take your breath away.

2. You can try the BEST fish and chips

We think Trenchers do the best fish and chips in Whitby

You haven't lived until you've tasted Whitby's fish and chips. Freshly caught from the North Sea, the fish is cooked to crispy perfection and paired with golden, crunchy chips.

Try it from the famous Magpie Cafe or the equally legendary Trenchers. Your taste buds will thank you, and you'll be desperate to return to have them again!

3. You can scare yourself on ghost walks

Red Hat Ghost Walk.

I love stories, especially ghost stories! As night falls, join a guided tour through the town's dark alleys and haunted spots. Hear chilling tales of pirates, smugglers, and ghostly apparitions.

They are the perfect mix of history and horror, leaving you with goosebumps and a newfound respect for Whitby's eerie past. They are also a great way to explore the town and see it from a local's perspective.

4. You can enjoy Whitby's quirky shops

Whitby Lucky Duck.

I love wandering around Whitby's quirky shops and finding treasures. From vintage gifts to handmade crafts, there's something for everyone.

My favourites are The Whitby Bookshop, the town's literary escape and Justins for the best chocolate. I always pick some up as a gift, and my child loves to see the fossils for sale at Natural Wonders or visit Whitby Glass for a lucky duck.

5. You can visit for Goth Weekend

Goth Weekend.

If you think Whitby has a gothic atmosphere on a regular day, wait until you experience the Whitby Goth Weekend!

Twice a year, this seaside town transforms into a gothic wonderland. Expect elaborate costumes and a fun atmosphere that's both eerie and electric.

It's a celebration of all things gothic, and I love visiting the town and immersing myself in this event.

6. You can take a beautiful coastal walk

Whitby to Robin Hood's Bay Walk

Whitby offers breathtaking coastal walks for those who love to pack their walking boots and explore the great outdoors. The Cleveland Way National Trail is a must-do, with cliffs and sea views.

Stroll along the beach, explore hidden coves, and let the sea breeze rejuvenate your soul.

It's nature at its most spectacular.
