description

Whitby Museum was founded in the early 1800s to showcase extraordinary fossils that ship captains brought back.

Over the years, the museum has preserved its authentic Victorian charm. The museum and art gallery have an impressive collection of stunning artwork and historical artefacts dating back over a century. Whitby Museum is truly unique and fascinating, exhibiting the life of this historic coastal town from the Jurassic era to the present day.

The diverse collection includes unusual and quirky pieces such as fossils, costumes, model ships, and other curiosities. The museum is a precious treasure trove that welcomes visitors of all ages and interests.

The building is shared with Pannett Art Gallery, which features permanent exhibitions showcasing the work of the Weatherill family and renowned local artists, as well as a dedicated room for the Staithes group of artists. In addition, the gallery hosts regularly changing exhibitions.
