The myth most frequently shared is the figure known as ‘Hairy Bob.’ Historical records confirm that a family named Bobb lived in Scarborough during this period. One of its members was indeed referred to as Hairy Bob.

According to local stories, he was a scruffy door-to-door salesman peddling ‘Yellowstone’ – a sandstone taken from the cliffs near the castle, commonly used for cleaning doorsteps. It’s possible that Hairy Bob created a cave to serve as a refuge from the elements while he gathered sandstone. Folklore suggests that he was a mild-mannered man. He was often henpecked, and the cave offered him a peaceful retreat from his wife’s sharp criticisms.

Falling Foss Waterfall amongst the trees.

Falling Foss Waterfall

Nestled within Sneaton Forest, the stunning 30-foot-high Falling Foss Waterfall is a sight to behold year-round. However, take care if you're visiting in the colder months, as the paths can become muddy and slippery.

One of our favourite times to visit is Autumn, especially after a rainy day when the waterfall is at its most forceful, adorned with swirling autumn leaves. The vibrant colours are breathtaking, making it an ideal spot for photography.

Falling Foss and its enchanting woodland surroundings are among our top destinations to explore while staying on the North Yorkshire Coast. It's a fantastic spot for families since the walking trails are manageable for younger children. Plus, there's a charming tea garden where you can take a break, enjoy a drink, and soak in the magical ambience.

Finding a day trip as beautiful as this is truly a treasure! You can follow the trails through the woodland, and on warm days, you might even enjoy paddling in the gentle waters or packing a picnic to savour lunch with a picturesque view.

Cayton Bay Beach

Cayton Bay is a stunning sandy beach in Yorkshire between Scarborough and Filey. This picturesque spot is ideal for families looking to play and surfers eager to catch some waves. The beach is flanked by cliffs and surrounded by beautiful countryside, enhancing its natural charm.

Cayton Bay features various amenities, such as a surf shop, cafes, and restroom facilities. In contrast to the bustling beaches of Scarborough, it offers a vast sandy expanse that feels quite rural, with lush woodlands extending right to the edge of the beach.

While paid parking is available, remember it's at the top of a steep concrete path leading down to the beach. If you're looking for a bite to eat, Lucy's Shack at the northern end of the beach offers delicious hot drinks served in real mugs, bacon sandwiches, and homemade cakes—all at affordable prices.

This bay is a popular destination for surfers and windsurfers alike. The Scarborough Surf School, one of the oldest in the UK, has provided surfing lessons at Cayton since 1989. If interested, you can take classes and rent equipment from them.

Anne Bronte Grave.

Anne Brontë's Grave

Anne Brontë, the youngest of the renowned Brontë sisters, had a profound connection to the coastal town of Scarborough, which significantly influenced her final days. Her time spent in Scarborough, along with her burial at St. Mary's Church, creates a touching narrative in her life and establishes a lasting bond between the author and the town.

Anne was laid to rest in the churchyard of St. Mary's, situated beneath the castle walls and overlooking the picturesque bay. Charlotte commissioned a gravestone for Anne's resting place to honour her memory.

Three years later, during a visit to the grave, Charlotte noticed several errors on the headstone and sought to have it corrected. Sadly, one mistake remained; the inscription inaccurately stated that Anne was 28 years old when she died rather than the accurate age of 29.

In 2011, the Brontë Society placed a new plaque at Anne Brontë's grave, as the original gravestone had become partially unreadable and could not be restored. While the original stone was left as is, the new plaque was installed horizontally to address the inaccuracies and clarify the faded inscriptions.

Today, Scarborough draws Brontë enthusiasts and serves as a reflective space for those wishing to delve deeper into Anne's life and literary contributions.
