The grey lady of Whitby
Whitby has had its fair share of encounters with grey ladies! Rob Lupine documented reports of a grey lady haunting a Whitby Primary School in the 1970s.

During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Rob attended a primary school on the east side of Whitby. In their final years at the school, the grey lady caused a lot of terror.
Rob first heard about the grey lady towards the end of a lunchtime break. A classmate approached them and asked if they knew about the grey lady. The grey lady was seen clothed in grey, dusty rags. Her hands and bare feet were red with bloody sores. She was heard sobbing in the school assembly hall, behind the scenery panels of the stage. Allegedly, the deputy headmaster had gone to investigate, only to be flung from the platform by her in a show of incredible strength.
As Rob did not witness this, they could not verify how much of the classmate's story was merely artistic license! However, they listened to the story with fascination.
The rumours spread throughout the entire school. Everything from missing pencil sharpeners to unexpected fire drills was being blamed on her.

The younger students were so scared that they wouldn't even go near the assembly hall, and there was a rumour that anyone who heard her sobs would die within 24 hours! The teachers tried to dismiss these stories.
Word spread across the playground that the grey lady was active in the assembly hall. Eager not to miss the opportunity, a group slipped out of the playground to witness this supposed paranormal activity firsthand.
They stood in the car park, not daring to get too close.
They noticed dark shadows moving around the hall. Suddenly, they all saw it move. The stored maypole began to sway back and forth until they were convinced it would topple over. At the centre of the maypole, gripping it tightly, was an old leathery hand with red, bloody sores.
The following day, the headmaster addressed the school and declared that there would be no further discussion of the grey lady, and any student caught spreading stories would face serious consequences. The rumour gradually faded away, as did any accounts of supernatural occurrences.
