We were lucky enough to be invited to meet Ben and his team at The Fisherman's Shack in Whitby this weekend. We got to try their wonderful cocktails, make our own and soak in the atmosphere.
Whitby is a wonderful place to wander from restaurant to pub to cocktail bar! We can confirm that at The Fisherman's Shack not only will you get a tasty, reasonably priced cocktail but a truly incredible view of the north sea too. We were lucky enough to be invited to meet Ben and his team at The Fisherman's Shack this weekend and here's what we thought…
The Fisherman's Shack is located underneath the Fisherman's Wife on Battery Parade (click here to view the location). It's also a bar and grill which serves fresh grilled seafood (the lobster and Piri Piri chicken are incredible here) or simply pop down after a delicious meal above to enjoy drinks with a view and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
Ben was really kind and welcoming and we loved hearing his passion for the business as well as the drinks he was making for us! The cocktail menu here has all your favourites from Pornstar Martinis to Gin Brambles. There's something for everyone to enjoy, they also have a great range of Beer and Gin on offer too.
Then it was time for us to get stuck in! We got the privilege of jumping behind the bar for a mini cocktail masterclass. We asked lots of questions and learned so much about cocktail making and even how we can easily make simple tasty cocktails at home.
The cocktail masterclasses here start at £25pp for 3 cocktails and £35 for 5. You learn a little about the cocktails and the techniques and of course, you get to drink them all too! These are great fun for hen parties, birthday parties or occasions.
We asked Ben to answer a few questions for us…
Hi Ben, thanks for inviting us to The Fisherman's Shack. We are really impressed with how it has been transformed. Can you tell us about the Fisherman’s shack and why people should visit?
Hi, we are brand new to Whitby. We have some amazing seafood on the grill and we have now launched our first cocktail menu with many more drinks to come in the near future. Couple that with the most amazing views of the sea… it’s stunning at sunset!
We were impressed with your cocktail making skills! What training or experience do you have in bartending?
I’ve been making cocktails for 20 years (that bit can stay a secret!) haha…. I’ve trained and opened cocktail bars all around the world and now we hope to make The Fisherman’s Shack the place to be for the best cocktails in town. Not only for exciting drinks but also for amazing value for money.
What do you like most about bartending?
The social part of the job. Meeting new people, getting to know what drinks they like and hopefully coming up with the perfect drink for them.
What’s your favourite drink to make?
The perfect drink for my guest! Cocktails don’t have to be complicated to be great. As long as everyone is loving the cocktail they ordered I’m a happy bartender.
What kind of cocktails will you be serving at The Fisherman’s Shack?
We have tried to make our first menu exciting with something for everyone. In the future, we have plans to extend the menu with a new one coming in February including some classic favourites along with some little creations of our own.
Tell us about the food on offer too…
We wanted The Shack to offer something a little different to our sister restaurant The Fisherman’s Wife with more seafood on the grill with dishes including lobster and prawn kebabs.
We love your ideas for Christmas parties and hen parties tell us more, what can people expect from them?
We are offering The Shack for private Christmas parties this year. We can accommodate up to 30 guests and the room hire is FREE! In the current climate, this is a great option for those wanting to social distance. We are offering this room hire alongside our cocktail Masterclasses. Learn how to make the perfect cocktail and of course, drink them all along the way! These are also great for hen parties or groups visiting Whitby that may be looking for something different and fun to do.
Whitby’s a special place for us, what’s it been like working in Whitby so far?
It’s fast becoming a special place for me too. It’s beautiful and everyone I’ve met so far has been amazing too. Our cocktails and table service have been well received by locals and tourists alike. This is just the beginning for me and the bar. We have lots more to come so keep an eye out!
We would like to thank Ben and the team at The Fisherman's Shack for having us. We were really impressed with the bar and will definitely be visiting again soon!
