The Whitby Boxing Day Dip
The Whitby Boxing Day Dip has become a tradition in this beautiful little seaside town. Who wouldn't want to enjoy a refreshing dip in the North Sea on Boxing Day morning? After all, what better way to cure your late festive blues than participating in this family-friendly outdoor charity event.
The Boxing Day Dip is organised by the Whitby District Lions Club. This fun and frantic event has now been running for more than 45 years. Over the past four decades, numbers have soared from a handful of brave local citizens to almost 200 eager dippers. Participants, known as ‘dippers’, travel from far and wide in a desperate frenzy to run into the wintery ice-cold waves of the North Sea.
The Boxing Day Dip is a get together for local families. An opportunity to meet up and shoot the breeze after the frivolities of Christmas in Whitby. Perhaps, unsurprisingly, there are a greater number of spectators than there are dippers!
Raising money for charity
This year due to the Covid 19 pandemic it will be operated under a different format whereby the participants pay a £10 entry fee; this will be paid directly to Whitby Lions. Participants can still raise sponsorship for your chosen charity. 100% of the money you raise goes to the charity/organisation of your choice.
Please note, that if you require a sponsor form, Whitby Lion’s will still issue one. However, unlike previous years the participant will fully be responsible for distributing their sponsor money to their chosen charity. Whitby Lion’s will not collect everyone’s sponsorship money and then distribute it. This is due to the unknown circumstances of covid and any future restrictions on any large events.
The 2019 dip had a record-breaking response with over 200 dippers taking part and at least a thousand spectators supporting the event and joining in with the fun. As a result, the club raised over £14,000.00 for various local and national charities.
How can I take part in the Whitby Boxing Day Dip?
The event is on 26th December 2021 at Whitby Bandstand. Registration opens at 10 AM, Fancy Dress judging at 10:30 AM followed by the dip. You have to be registered to take part, it costs £10 per entry.

All dippers MUST be registered to take part as the insurance does not cover anyone who is not registered.
After purchasing your event entry either through the linked website or at The Whitby Pet Shop, you still need to register on the day at the registration tent. This ensures they know how many people are doing the dip for safety reasons.
You can still sign up for the event on the morning of it by going to the registration tent and paying the £10 entry fee by either credit/debit card or cash.
Registration opens at 10 AM on Boxing Day morning and is situated next to the Bandstand on Pier Road opposite the RNLI Museum, Whitby.
