Do you think your child would love weird and creepy tales of Whitby? Our 8-year-old loves to visit Whitby, and recently, he's discovered an even bigger love for reading. We purchased the Screamie Jeemies series to read with him of an evening, and he's loved them. These books are aimed at children ages 8 to 12 (though they may be enjoyed by anyone up to 80!). These four books blend spooky thrills with a dash of humour; every page turn is a delightful shiver of excitement. In the stories, the various child characters meet vampires, Goths, smugglers, fossil hunters, dinosaurs, flying fish and more, all in wonderful Whitby.

Fog Ship Fear Trip!
This edge-of-your-seat adventure starts on a seemingly idyllic boat ride and quickly spirals into a heart-pounding mystery. The story centres around Mia and her sister Rose, who are excitedly hoping to spot dolphins on their journey from Whitby Harbour. Our son particularly loved the characters and their bond in this story. However, their excitement turns to terror as they sail into a dense, eerie fog known as the sea fret.
Jones masterfully builds suspense from when the fog descends, transforming the voyage into a nightmarish ordeal. Each new twist keeps readers guessing how the sisters will navigate this perilous situation.
Mysteriosaur and the Saltwick Sphinx
Sshh but this may have been our son's favourite! Mysteriosaur and the Saltwick Sphinx plunges readers into a prehistoric mystery with a modern twist. Toby’s visit to his cousin Keisha in Whitby takes an unexpected turn when they stumble upon living dinosaurs in a cave at Saltwick Bay. Keisha’s father and his team have unearthed a spectacular fossil crocodile.
The narrative quickly escalates from a simple fossil discovery to a thrilling chase through the heart of Whitby. The dynamic between Toby and Keisha is delightful, showcasing their bravery and quick thinking as they navigate the dangers of encountering Jurassic creatures.
Our son really loved this book as we often visit Saltwick Bay to search for fossils, so he felt he could really imagine the story.
The Vampire Shadow Dog
This story follows Jack on holiday with his friend Violet and her pesky younger brother Tom. Their adventure begins when they spot a peculiar shadow of a dog playing on the famous 199 Steps.
Curiosity piqued, they follow the shadow to a cottage on Church Street, where they meet Lucy, the dog's owner. As they delve deeper into the mystery, they encounter Lucy's grandfather, who exudes an eerie, vampire-like presence that adds an exciting layer of suspense to the tale.
We loved reading this book together (this was my personal favourite!) It felt like a child-friendly, fun take on Dracula.
The Wrath of the Whitby Goth Moth
Last but by no means least, The Wrath of the Whitby Goth Moth is a great book to read if you enjoy visiting Whitby for Goth Weekend.
When a new Goth shop advertises for kids to model vampire costumes for a short film, it seems the perfect way for Ethan, Scarlet, and their friends to cure their boredom.
However, the excitement quickly takes a sinister turn when a hat mysteriously swallows Ethan! These short but sweet scary but fun books are brilliant!
We have loved reading this series with our son, and it's so lovely that he recognises many of the Whitby locations within the books and can vividly imagine the stories. They are the perfect balance of scary and fun. So grab your flashlight, snuggle under the covers, and enjoy Halogen Jones' latest book series.
