Sanders Yard Bistro gets rave reviews; many times we have visited Whitby, they are always full, and often there is a queue to get in. This means one thing, the food is excellent! The service is great too, and the atmosphere is magical; they are located in one of Whitby’s historic yards.

Here you can get a complete vegan breakfast with falafel, hash browns, mushrooms, tomatoes, beans and toast. Or a full vegetarian breakfast including Quorn sausages, hash brown, a free-range egg, mushrooms, tomato, beans and toast. If it’s the sweeter veggie breakfast you are after, we highly recommend the french toast!

There are also daytime, evening, sharing platter and greek menus to try. Not one of them disappoints, and all menus have vegetarian and vegan options. We recommend the Vegan Platter, which includes spicey falafel, marinated roasted vegetables, hummus, mixed olives, beetroot pate, pita bread, and a salad or vegetable burger, topped with halloumi, salad, tomato salsa and served with fries.

Humble Pie and Mash

Humble Pie and Mash in Whitby is a great place to get vegan or vegetarian food.

Humble Pie and Mash has to be one of our favourite spots to visit in Whitby. The pies are homemade, tasty and comforting. Of course, we always think meat when we think of pie and mash, but they also offer a range of vegan and vegetarian pies. They offer a roast veg and goats cheese pie made with welsh goat cheese, slow roasted sweet potatoes, butternut squash and seasonal veg. A romany hommity pie made with potatoes, garlic, cheese, spices and parsley. Or their vegan option is made from roasted peppers, butternut squash and chickpeas in a spicy tomato sauce. They also have a new vegan woodland mushroom and ale pie made with earthy mushrooms, carrots and onions, then delicately seasoned with rich gravy (vegan), crowned with a vegan puff pastry lid, laced with soya milk and thyme. All pies are served with homemade mashed potatoes, mushy peas or garden peas.

Cranberry Swamp

Vegetarian and vegan food from Cranberry Swamp in Whitby

Cranberry Swamp is a friendly cafe on Skinner Street. They serve a wide range of light meals throughout the day. They offer a selection of tasty vegetarian and vegan options, such as mixed bean chilli, panini’s with different fillings that can all be made with vegan cheese, and a falafel platter. All of which we have tried and tested and are delicious. They specialise in gluten-free food as well as meat dishes and vegan and vegetarian dishes. We think this is an excellent option if you are after a vegan or vegetarian meal in Whitby.

The Blitz

The Blitz in Whitby is a great place to eat vegan or vegetarian food.

We love The Blitz in Whitby with its 1940s theming; if it’s a unique atmosphere you are after, then this restaurant and tapas bar is perfect. Their menu consists of dishes mainly with a Spanish influence and international dishes from around the world. They also serve several vegan and vegetarian dishes. A few of our favourite vegan dishes are vegan saag paneer, stuffed mushrooms and spiced chickpea and roasted vegetable ragou. P.s. the cocktails here are fantastic! Rusty Shears

Rusty Shears in Whitby Vegan Food

Rusty Shears is located just off Silver Street, so it is often overlooked, but we assure you it is a must-visit when coming to Whitby. They serve the tastiest homemade cakes and pastries, speciality teas, coffees and over 150 gins. They serve food from breakfast through to the late afternoon, and at weekends, Rusty Shears hosts bistro evenings where they give their chefs freedom to create exciting menus.

They feature a Countryside Platter which is vegan and includes antipasti, olives, beetroot, hummus, falafels and local bread, a smashed avocado bagel with fresh coriander, Urfa chilli and charred Lime and plenty on the specials board to try.

Robertson’s

Robertsons Pea Fritter Vegan Option in Whitby

Fancy chips? Of course, you do; you’re in Whitby! Robertson’s is an excellent choice as they have separate vegetarian and vegan menus. The mushy pea fritters and vegan tartare sauce are absolute favourites of ours. The restaurant is light and airy, and the service is always fantastic.
