Starting off our list, this chip shop was voted by the local gazette as the best fish and chip shop in Whitby. Due to its longstanding reputation, Hadley’s Fish and Chips opened its takeaway store in 2016. Ideal for those who want to enjoy their food in the great outdoors, this menu still boasts the restaurant’s popular homemade tartare sauce and mushy peas alongside cod, haddock, and fishcakes.

2. Abbey Wharf
Through the main entrance of Abbey Wharf’s popular restaurant and bar is a brilliant takeaway section, ideal for those who want to enjoy their food whilst strolling along the nearby pier. Abbey Wharf also offers a fantastic children’s menu for reasonable prices. For those who want a little more variation, the restaurant has a wide selection of freshly caught seafood as well as steak, chicken, and daily vegetarian specials.

With a carefully crafted menu of vegan and gluten-free options, Robertsons sets itself apart from other fish and chip shops in Whitby. Along with the usual favourites that you would expect of any seaside fish shop, Robertson’s can fry their delicious fish dishes and onion rings in a gluten-free batter. They also have gluten-free burger buns and bread on the restaurant menu. The vegetarian menu includes veggie sausages, lasagne, spring rolls, and a spicy bean burger; just ask for vegan options and the knowledgeable staff will be more than happy to help.

This award-winning restaurant and takeaway is best identified by its picturesque green exterior nestled along Pier Road. The chefs here take pride in offering 100% MSC-certified fish, meaning that it is sustainably sourced. Quayside has an extensive menu including a wholesome homemade fish pie, salads, and classic cod and chips, not to mention a whole host of gluten-free options.

5. Mister Chips
Voted by the Guardian as one of Britain’s top ten seaside fish and chip shops, Mister Chips has an exceedingly high reputation to live up to. This coastal establishment has been serving up delicious comfort food since 1981. In the restaurant, visitors can enjoy an a la carte menu of gorgeously presented dishes including a Seafood Chowder and a Steak Casserole.
The takeaway section of Mister Chips offers a far more casual dining experience and perhaps the best way to enjoy their notable cod and chips. The homemade batter recipe is fried in a way that prevents the fish from becoming too greasy and they even offer their very own gluten-free mix upon request.
To top it off, Mister Chips is part of the Responsible Fishing Scheme which strives to use only ethically and locally sourced products.
6. Fish Box
Ideal for families and travellers who are on the go, Fish Box is a charming fast-paced fish and chip shop that cooks up high-quality dishes to suit all budgets. With a small outside seating area, this low-key eatery is a welcoming place to eat while exploring the Whitby coastline. Despite what the name might suggest, Fish Box also offers Chicken Fillets, Steak Pies, and Jacket Potatoes.

7. Silver Street Fisheries
Silver Street Fisheries is a local takeaway shop with excellent reviews. Located along Silver Street, this chip shop offers traditional fish and chips topped with a side of mushy peas. It’s simple but does the job and is particularly popular with Whitby locals. (Sssshhh but…it might just be our favourite!)
An authentic Yorkshire chip shop since 1980, Trenchers is a perfect place to go if you are looking for affordable British comfort food. Along with an excellent takeaway menu, Trenchers serves up a wide variety of succulent meals including a Seafood Salad, a gluten-free Seafood Chowder, and a vegan Spinach and Falafel Burger. If it’s a traditional takeaway chippy you’re after, then Trenchers also serves the usual battered fish options including cod, haddock, and scampi.
9. The Fisherman’s Wife
With branches in Leeds, York, and Whitby, when it comes to good food the Fisherman’s Wife has plenty of experience. Its charming Whitby store is nestled along the coast offering picturesque sea views. The seafood on this menu is purchased directly from Whitby’s very own fish market so you can expect to sample fresh, locally sourced food.
Unfortunately, this branch does not offer a takeaway menu but if you want to enjoy some of the finest views in Whitby whilst tucking into some delicious Yorkshire dishes, this is the place. There are locally sourced lobsters, seafood platters for two, and freshly prepared salads. There are also some great vegetarian options including a homemade curry served with lime coriander rice and naan bread.

10. Railway Chippy
Offering home deliveries and in-store takeaways, the Railway Chippy is a typical local chip shop. There are also some unique items on the menu including Pineapple Rings, Cheese, and Onion Fry Its, and Black Pudding.

Located along the harbour, Magpie Café is one of Whitby’s most famous restaurants. The Magpie Café is renowned for its fresh seafood which is prepared and delivered directly from the boat to the table within 24 hours.
