One thing people always note when visiting Whitby is just how dog friendly it is. Dogs are welcome to stay in much of the accommodation, relax in a pub or restaurant, run along the beach, and join in excursions by your side. So here are things to do in Whitby with a dog.
Many of us don’t want to or can’t leave our four-legged friends behind when we go on a holiday or day trip. The fantastic thing about Whitby is that you don’t have to think twice about taking them with you. Whitby is renowned for being dog friendly; in fact, the dogs are probably more welcome than some of the humans! Of course, we are joking; however, most pubs and restaurants will have treats and a warm welcome for you all. Whitby is the perfect place to holiday with your pet, with great places to walk, stay, eat, and drink. Here are things to do in Whitby with a dog.
Find yourself dog-friendly accommodation
Finding accommodation for you and your pets can often feel daunting, but many places to stay in Whitby that allow dogs. We recently stayed in Tides by Host Stay, and we cannot recommend it enough; the property was all on one level, which was great for our grandparents and their dog. It was spotlessly clean and nicely decorated, within a great location of the town centre. The apartment features two bedrooms, a flat-screen TV, a fully equipped kitchen including a dishwasher and a microwave, a washing machine, and a bathroom with a shower. You can find more information and book online here.

Take your dog to one of Whitby’s dog friendly beaches
Tate Hill Beach is one of our favourite beaches to take the dogs to. It is a small sandy beach within the Harbour and is a great spot to stop and let them run off some energy whilst you are exploring the town. Tate Hill Beach is also fantastic for photos and fossil, jet and sea glass hunting. Dogs are allowed on this beach all year long.
Dogs are also allowed on Whitby West Cliff Beach, Upgang Whitby Beach, Saltwick Bay Beach, Sandsend Beach, and Sandsend Ness. All are beautiful beaches offering different views of the North Yorkshire Coastline, but please note that on many of the beaches there is a seasonal dog beach ban around Whitby from May to September; take notice of the signs when entering the beach areas. This is because the beaches can get busy at peak times of the year or if there are events in the town. However, with so much space and many beaches, one will suit you and your pup when you visit. You can read our full Whitby beaches guide here.
Stop for a drink at a dog friendly pub in Whitby
If you consider bringing your pup to one of Whitby’s pubs, you’ll be more than welcome at the following dog friendly pubs in Whitby. Whitby is jam-packed with charming pubs where you will feel like you have stepped back in time. Most of the pubs in Whitby allow dogs in, too, which is great as you won’t miss out on grabbing a drink in one of Whitby’s many historical inns. Often the landlord will have water bowls and treats for dogs which means your dog gets a refreshment too.
One of our favourite places to visit with our dog when in Whitby is Abbey Wharf restaurant and pub. They serve great food and great beer! With the most stunning harbour views, dogs are welcome here and are allowed in the restaurant and the bar and terrace. You can read our detailed review of The Abbey Wharf here.
Enjoy dog friendly attractions in Whitby
There are so many great attractions in Whitby that you can take your dog along. They can join you on a walk of the Cleveland Way, ghost walks, into museums and even on boat trips.
One of our favourite attractions in Whitby is the Captain Cook Experience, and the great news is that dogs are allowed on the trip for free. On this boat cruise, you sail along the harbour and witness the historical impact that Captain Cook had on the town. You set sail on a replica of Captain Cook’s famous Endeavour ship 40% of the size of the original. It’s a great way to enjoy the incredible North Yorkshire Coastline. If you are lucky, you can also see plenty of wildlife, such as sea birds, seals, and even dolphins and whales.
No booking is required to jump on board. Sailings start from 10:00-10:30 am most days throughout the year (subject to weather and tide conditions). You can board from Whitby Harbour at the Fish Quay, close to the West Pier opposite Whitby Amusements.
